Vibrator Technology

A guru in the sexpert circles, Jocelyn Saurini, writes the high-tech revolution is far from over. In fact, in the world of sex toys, it's just beginning. Although sextoys have been around for centuries, the technology behind sex toys hasn't. Women in the 60s and 70s used archaic sextoy vibrators that featured loud, bulky battery packs, a short shelf life, and one speed of vibration. Today's woman has a bevy of options made possible by the application of progressive technology to vibrators and other sex toys. How lucky are we?

Granted, it took a long time for manufacturers to decide it was a good idea to use a microchip in a vibrator sex toy. We still have a long way to go to make the technological standards of sex toys compatible with, say, a video game, but improvements in sextoy technology are happening. Innovative designs, synthetic materials and vibrations that go from erotic to extreme are just some of the high-tech advances in adult sex toys that we're enjoying in the new millennium. In this Bulletin, featured on mypleasures.com, we'll take a look at some of the strides forward the sex toy industry has made, and then visit what we'd really like to see happen with technology and vibrators.

Pulsatronic: Vibrations of the Future
The latest and greatest thing to happen to vibrators is the pulsatronic trend. Sex toys with this feature don't just vibrate, they offer a series of options varying from quick, tiny pulses, to long extended vibrations that start out softly and then increase to a fevered point before slowing down again. This sex toy technology is made possible with the insertion of a microchip [into the vibrator] that holds the patterns of vibration in memory. Pulsatronic technology is available in smaller sex toy bullets. We've found that using these tiny, pulsating vibrators for clitoral or nipple stimulation has women raving. However, manufacturers have started applying the pulsatronic perk to larger vibrators and nipple sex toys. We're still waiting for the pulsatronic vibrating erection ring, but we're sure when it comes out it will be a hit!

Smaller is Better!
If liberated women of the 70s wanted to take their vibrators on a trip, they needed an entire separate suitcase for them! With advances in technology, manufacturers have created smaller vibrators with smaller batteries that travel more easily. Some vibrators are so small they can be slipped into a purse and carried around daily -- requiring not two to four AA batteries, but tiny, longer-lasting 9-volt or watch batteries. Vibrating Erection Rings have also become smaller, so couples have less bulkiness between them when using these sex toys. Smaller bullets also mean more precise stimulation, but the best part is that so far none of these tiny sex toys seem to be losing any power or intensity. In fact, we've been known here to warn people that a sex toy with a micro bullet may be too powerful because of the pinpoint nature of the vibrations. Smaller sex toys can pack a wallop!

Wireless and Remote Control: Not Just for Phones and Stereos
Remote controlled panties and butterfly toys have been around for a few years now, but as technology bravely marches forward, sex toy manufacturers have applied the wonder of remote-control technology to eggs, anal plugs and even erection sex toys. Best of all, as sex toy manufacturers learn more about this technology, the range of the vibrator remotes gets longer, so you can play further apart. If you don't need (or want to spend the money for) a remote-controlled sex toy product, the introduction of smaller motors, watch batteries and micro chips has allowed for an entire series of sex toys without the need for wires. These include vibrators, erection rings, bullets and more!

Synthetic Materials: Better Than Lifelike
Many sex toy makers have focused their technological resources on creating newer and better materials that feel superior, are easier to clean, last longer, and often warm to the touch. Cyberskin, silicone, and acrylic sex toys all offer unique options for the toy buyer. Even our old sex toy friend, jelly and rubber, has been improved to be less porous and smell better (not good, mind you, but better). And since a sex toy is useless to you if its material doesn't feel good, we're excited manufacturers are paying attention to the sense of touch!

Who Said a Vibrator Needs to be Phallic?
Have you ever seen a movie from the 70s, in which people go to an adult sex toy store to buy a vibrator and the wall is lined with nothing but phallic-shaped sex toys? No longer the case. Vibrators and other sex toys are coming in just about every shape, ranging from the animal shapes inspired Exotic Vibrators, to the wild multi-purpose shapes of the recent acrylic or glass dildos.

Sssshh! Quiet!
The one feature we all want seems to be the one thing sex toy technology hasn't found an answer for yet -- a quiet vibrator! While the sound factor has certainly improved -- some vibrators are actually whisper quiet -- for the most part, plan on having cover noise if you want to use your vibrator with total privacy. Given that the technology exists to create silent vibration, I am begging and pleading with the high-tech sex toy makers of the world... please create a silent vibrator, a truly silent vibrator that doesn't make any noise, but actually vibrates. Technology is a great thing! It allows us to get online and read exciting columns about sex toys, and helps sex toys become better each year. So the next time someone is complaining that technology is ruining the world, just silently think to yourself how much better your world, or at least your bedroom, is because of technology!
