A few years ago dating services and personal ads were seen as a sort of last resort for singles. Today—-not so. Dating service and personal ads are one of the big new trends for the city dwelling professional. In a city where everyone is looking for love and no one has time to find it, the dating service and the internet personal ad is a savior. The ten minute coffee break date and the eight minute dating phenomenon are revolutionizing the city's approach to finding love in a time frame that suits busy young professionals.
A few months ago one of my girl friends introduced me to the Craig's List personals. True, this was more of an entertainment foray where we posted messages in hopes of receiving naughty replies (which we did!), however, the popularity of Craig's List as an easy way to meet people–-over anonymous e-mail exchanges–-left a lasting impression.
For one reason or another Craig's list slipped my mind until a friend mentioned how some of his law firm colleagues were obsessed with Craig's List. This was confirmed by one friend after another. People are at work spending time on Craig's List, getting a kick, getting off and getting dates. Its not quite cybersex (although the man seeking man personals and the casual encounters personals do carry a sexual content warning) but a covert operation to either get laid or to get a date all while at one's desk at work. Brilliant. So I took a second look at Craig's List... and got hooked.

Inspired I moved on to the W4W postings and found that women were not posting just to be meeting people for sexual encounters (surprising how many of the w4w were married or in other relationships...) But were actually looking for soul mates or people in similar situations as themselves, such as this woman: "Woman seeking woman that is struggling and poor like me! -Hi, i am a 26yr old female seeking a woman with problems! I have bad credit, no job, hardly any money, am not that attractive, no friends, and no life! I am seeking a woman in this same predicament. This is no joke post here, I am just being brutally honest. please reply if this is you. Seriously!!!"
Men for women postings were either direct (you & me, skip the dinner and move on to the whipped cream) or heartbreaking messages strangely reminiscent of Hollywood romantic comedies--c'mon guys, there is only one Ben Affleck. Somewhere in between the more entertaining (and eye catching!) postings appear, from fetish [cute boy curious to be transformed into pretty girl. somewhat inexperienced looking for an intelligent woman that likes the notion of slowly transforming me into her pretty girl...] to downright naughty!: "Are you a Naughty Girl? Is there a truly naughty girl out there? My fiance is away for 2 days and if you like the idea of that, it's time to email. my place is available all night. pics available. 18-30 please." I was tempted to reply... almost... but time is crucial and more postings beckoned.
For wham bam thank-you ma'am get-to-the-point raunchiness, nothing competes with the man for man personals. Move over M4W and take your hankies with you, this is where the real action is. Believe me, the XXX-warning is well deserved: "Use me, my mouth, make me swallow, objectify me, degrade me, use me to get off, discard me" or "hot ass anonymous fuck hole collecting loads near Grand Central looking for no strings anonymous pump n' dump scenes walk in find me ass up face down clean greased and ready drop pants lube up slide in shoot ur load in the hole then leave" being some of the more typical entries. Discretionary door--please be height/weight proportionate. Other postings delve into erotic fantasies such as being taken advantage of by "daddy" or of modeling women's clothes for another man.
Admittedly after reading the M4M postings, the casual encounters postings, though racy, just didn't match up and missed connections were oddly reminiscent of John Cusack's worst efforts. In short, if you're looking for action in the city over e-mail or a drink, prowl Craig's List and you won't be disappointed.
